Nintendo is renowned for creating engaging, polished, and accessible video games. Titles like The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom showcase the company's mastery, offering elegant gameplay that appeals to a broad audience. These games rarely leave players feeling frustrated or inadequate.

However, the Mario Party series has always taken a different approach. While easy to pick up and play, the series has traditionally focused on the unpredictable nature of the game, reminding players that they're not always in control. This unpredictability has been a hallmark of the series for over 25 years.

Super Mario Party Jamboree, the latest installment in the series, is now available on Nintendo Switch. After spending time with the game, I can confirm that it retains the series' signature unpredictability. Although it may not conform to traditional notions of a "good video game," it's undeniably entertaining. Jamboree is a multiplayer board game designed for up to four players, both locally and online. Games are divided into 10-30 turns, with each player rolling dice to navigate the board and collect coins to purchase stars. The ultimate goal is to accumulate the most stars by the end of the game. However, bonus stars are randomly awarded at the end, often leading to unexpected winners.

Jamboree introduces new maps, including a few from the original N64 games, as well as mechanical tweaks. The most significant addition is Jamboree Buddies – support characters that appear on the board for a few turns. When a player passes by a Jamboree Buddy, they trigger a time-consuming mini-game for all players, with the winner recruiting the Buddy to provide unique bonuses.

A Revitalized Take on Mario Party

I recently had the opportunity to engage in a thrilling 10-turn game of Super Mario Party Jamboree with my roommate, and it was a truly enlightening experience. Despite the game's lengthy duration – over an hour – we both had an absolute blast. The Mario Party formula still retains its magic, as long as you're in the right mindset.

The Role of Chance

This series has always been characterized by its emphasis on chance and unpredictability, and Jamboree is no exception. A prime example of this is when my roommate landed on a space that allowed him to pilfer a star from me – a move that briefly put him in the lead. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, he soon lost the star, was left with no coins, and I ended up with even more stars than before. It was a stark reminder that, in Mario Party, you're often at the mercy of fate.

The Unpredictable Essence of Mario Party

That's the essence of Mario Party – it's an experience that's as much about chance as it is about strategy. You can approach each turn with a plan, but there's always something unexpected waiting for you. It's a wild ride, and one that I'm happy to embark on every time.

New Additions to the Series

Nintendo has made some notable enhancements to the series with Jamboree. The new Jamboree Buddies, for instance, are a game-changer – they're worth the effort it takes to acquire them. The new maps, including a speedway map where characters drive open-wheel racecars, are also a welcome addition.

Multiplayer and Side Modes

Jamboree also features a 20-player online multiplayer mode, which I haven't had a chance to try yet. Additionally, there are several side modes, including a basic single-player mode that introduces players to various mini-games. These modes should keep kids entertained for hours.

Familiar Issues Persist

Unfortunately, Jamboree still suffers from some of the same issues that have plagued the series. Mini-games can be finicky, especially those that involve platforming or motion controls. And, as I mentioned earlier, games can take a long time to finish.

It's pointless to fault Mario Party for being true to its roots. With nearly three decades of history, it's clear that Nintendo has intentionally crafted this series to be what it is. If you're a fiercely competitive player seeking a challenge that demands skill and strategy, you might be better off with a traditional board game. However, for those who take pleasure in their friends' misfortune more than their own success, Mario Party is the perfect fit – and Jamboree delivers just that.

Prepare for a thrilling adventure as Super Mario Party Jamboree arrives on the Nintendo Switch on October 17, bringing excitement and joy to gamers of all ages.
