NBC News indicates that online merchants and drone technology companies are offering RF phone jammer as solutions for drone deterrence or privacy enhancement, thus circumventing legal restrictions on the sale of these devices in the United States.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has released a warning that signal jamming devices may prevent emergency calls from going through, creating a serious danger to public safety communications. These devices also disrupt other common communication channels and air navigation systems.
The FCC has indicated that it is illegal under federal law to operate a phone jammer, GPS blocker, or any other device intended to intentionally obstruct, disrupt, or interfere with authorized radio communications. This law applies universally, encompassing businesses, classrooms, residences, and vehicles. Moreover, local law enforcement agencies are not permitted to use jamming devices independently; such devices may only be utilized by federal law enforcement agencies in accordance with applicable regulations and under specific limited exceptions.
The FCC has issued a warning stating that it is against the law to advertise, sell, distribute, import, or otherwise market jamming devices to consumers in the United States.
NBC's report indicates that third-party sellers on Amazon, independent online stores from China, and small domestic companies that deal in drone-related equipment are failing to adhere to the law. The FCC has stated to NBC that it is conducting an investigation into the sale of jammers, including those found on Amazon.
As part of its inquiry, NBC News conducted an interview with the CEO of a US company that markets portable anti-drone radio frequency jammers online. The CEO conveyed to NBC News that these devices are readily available to consumers who can afford them, yet the majority of interest is being directed towards large corporations and government agencies preparing for threats related to domestic drone terrorism.
