The Significance of Kalo Dungar

Kalo Dungar, translating to "Black Hill," is not only the tallest point in Kutch but also one that carries centuries-old legends. Perched at about 462 metres above sea level, it offers a vantage point like no other in the region. The hill is home to the revered Dattatreya Temple, dedicated to Lord Dattatreya, a deity believed to be an incarnation of the holy trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

A fascinating legend surrounds this temple – it is said that Lord Dattatreya once fed starving jackals with his own body. Since then, the practice of feeding jackals continues as a tradition, upheld by temple priests to this day. Visitors often witness jackals arriving at specific times to be fed, reinforcing the mystical aura of this sacred place.
